Mt. Olympus’ wonderful nature of rich flora (over 1700 species, more than 20 of which endemic) and fauna (more than 30 species of mammals, 100 species of birds, 18 species of reptiles) left the modern Greeks with no choice but to proclaim it the first National Forest in 1938. The Pinus leucodermis in this area forms the highest forest levels in Europe (2,500 m). The greatest concentration of rare plants and animals establishes the area as a true paradise for the conservation of rare flora and fauna of Greece and Europe. The area makes up the core of the National Park which was founded in 1938. The predominance of limestone greatly influences the climate and the appearance of the vegetation. As a result of the limestone, the basic features are the deep valleys and steep slopes (Enipea Valley). The limestone makes the climate drier as well as increasing the temperature and absorbing the precipitation. The predominant forest species is Pinus leucodermis which forms mainly homogeneous clusters. Alpine valleys cover the area above the forest levels (2,500 m). There are many endemic species in which Jankaea heldreichii is included. At 263 km from Athens and 78 from Thessaloniki (Greece’s second biggest city) the area is ideal for the lovers of alternative activities, ranging from trekking to paragliding, canyoning, rafting, climbing, mountain-biking and jeep safari. But you don’t have to go extreme to have your personal Olympian moments. SKI MOUNTAINEERING


Ο Όλυμπος είναι ένας από τους πιο δημοφιλείς προορισμούς ορειβασίας για σκι στην Ελλάδα και είναι μάλιστα προορισμός παγκόσμιας κλάσης λόγω της γειτνίασής του με τη θάλασσα και του διαφορετικού ανάγλυφου (εύκολο ανάγλυφο στο δυτικό τμήμα του βουνού, απότομες πλαγιές και στενοί βραχώδεις σχηματισμοί στο ανατολικά και βόρεια), οι μεγάλες διαδρομές (1000 – 2000 μ. διαφορά υψομέτρου ανάλογα με την κάλυψη του χιονιού) και τη μεγάλη περίοδο, καθώς το σκι ξεκινά στις αρχές Δεκεμβρίου και μπορεί να διαρκέσει μέχρι τις αρχές Ιουνίου.

Mount Olympus comprises one of the most popular ski mountaineering destinations in Greece and even a world class destination due to its proximity to the sea, the variable relief (easy terrain on the west part of the mountain, steep slopes and narrow coloirs on the east and north sides), the long descents (1000 – 2000m in elevation drop depending on the snow cover) and the long season as skiing starts in early December and can last until the beginning of June.

HIKING / TREKKING


Τα μονοπάτια πεζοπορίας στον Όλυμπο ξεπερνούν σε συνολικό μήκος τα 160 χλμ. Τα μονοπάτια και οι πεζοπορικές διαδρομές του Ολύμπου προέρχονται από την αρχαιότητα καλύπτοντας το μεγαλύτερο μέρος της ευρύτερης περιοχής του βουνού. Έχουν χρησιμοποιηθεί στο πέρασμα των χρόνων για θρησκευτικούς σκοπούς, για υλοτομία, για κυνήγι, για κτηνοτροφία και από τη δεκαετία του 1950 για αναψυχή (πεζοπορία, αλπινισμός, τρέξιμο σε μονοπάτια, ορεινή ποδηλασία).

Mount Olympus hiking trails exceed to a total length of 160km. Trails and hiking routes of Mount Olympus have originated since antiquity covering the majority of the mountain’s broader area. They have been used through the years for religious purposes, for logging, for hunting, for livestock and since the 1950’s for recreation (hiking, alpinism, trail running, mountain biking).

Ο αλπινισμός εισήχθη στις βραχώδεις όψεις του Ολύμπου το καλοκαίρι του 1934, όταν ο διάσημος Ιταλός αλπινιστής Emilio Comici καθιέρωσε τις πρώτες διαδρομές στην ανατολική πλευρά του Στεφανίου και στη βορειοδυτική πλευρά του Μύτικα. Ένα μήνα αργότερα οι Σλοβένοι αλπινιστές Marijan Lipovsek και Leo Pipan καθιέρωσαν την πολύ πιο σοβαρή διαδρομή της Σλοβενίας στη βόρεια πλευρά του Skolio. Έκτοτε έχουν πραγματοποιηθεί περίπου 90 διαδρομές στο βουνό, 68 από τις οποίες υπάρχουν στο πάνω βουνό (Μύτικας, Σκολιό, Στεφάνι, Καλάια και Σταυρατίες) ενώ οι υπόλοιπες 22 έχουν εδραιωθεί στη βράχο της Ζίλνιας, του χαρακτηριστικού βράχου με νότιο προσανατολισμό. πρόσωπο εύκολα ορατό από την κεντρική πλατεία του Λιτοχώρου.

Alpinism was introduced on the rock faces of Mount Olympus during the summer of 1934, when Italian renowned alpinist Emilio Comici established the first routes on the east face of Stefani and on the northwest face of Mytikas. A month later Slovenian alpinists Marijan Lipovsek and Leo Pipan established the much-more-serious Slovenian route on the north face of Skolio. Since then there have been about 90 routes on the mountain, 68 of which exist on the upper mountain (Mytikas, Skolio, Stefani, Kalaia and Stauraities) whereas the remaining 22 have been established on the rock face of Zilnia, the characteristic south facing rock face easily seen from the main square of Litochoro.

MOUNT OLYMPUS REFUGES


Εκτός από το σπίτι των ελληνικών μυθολογικών θεών, ο Όλυμπος προσφέρει καταφύγιο σε όσους το αναζητούν, συναντώντας διάφορα είδη χλωρίδας και πανίδας. Από ορειβάτες μέχρι πεζοπόρους, από πεζοπόρους μέχρι λάτρεις της φύσης, όλοι είναι ευπρόσδεκτοι να επισκεφτούν αυτό το φυσικό μνημείο.

Υπάρχουν οκτώ καταφύγια του Ολύμπου που βρίσκονται ανάμεσα στις κύριες διαδρομές των πλαγιών, τα περισσότερα από τα οποία λειτουργούν όλο το χρόνο κατόπιν συνεννόησης.

Τα καταφύγια του Ολύμπου εκτείνονται διάσπαρτα στις κορυφές του ορεινού όγκου, δημιουργώντας μια φωλιά από εστίες γύρω από την κορυφή του Μύτικα.

Besides being a home to the Greek mythological gods, Mount Olympus offers shelter to those who seek it, meeting various species of flora and fauna. From mountaineers to hikers, from trekkers to nature enthusiasts, all are welcomed to visit this natural monument.

There are eight Mount Olympus refuges that are positioned among the main routes of the slopes, most of which operate all year round upon prior arrangement.

Mount Olympus refuges span scattered among the peaks of the massif, creating a nest of hearths around the summit of Mytikas.
